Contemporary Movement Artist

NORBERTO COLLAZO


Norberto Collazo is a movement artist, educator, director, and producer. He holds a Dance M.F.A. from Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, and a B.A. under the PREI Individualized Studies Program of the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus. He has trained in the techniques Afro-Caribbean, folklore, Gaga, Flying Low, Passing Through, Fighting Monkey, Improvisation, Contact Improvisation, Postmodern Composition, West African, Taylor, Graham, Ballet, Mask Theater, and others.

As a choreographer, Norberto has presented original works and offered workshops in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Cuba, Prague, Spain, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Saint Petersburg, and Japan. Collazo was part of the Puerto Rican Youth Ballet, directed by Zaida Varas. Years later he directed the dance group of the Aibonito School Marching Band. He worked professionally with the choreographer Marcelino Alcalá, appearing both on local television and in musical magazines for different hotels. Since 2003 he has collaborated as a dancer, choreographer, consultant, and assistant director for Hincapié, under the direction of Petra Bravo. In 2009 he joined Andanza Compañía Puertorriqueña de Danza Contemporánea as a dancer and went to work as a teacher and choreographer.

Since 2003 he has produced events as an independent artist inside and outside of Puerto Rico. In 2012, Collazo was the first artist-in-residence at the Luis A. Ferré Fine Arts Center. Norberto directs NA2 Dance Theater, an independent project founded in 2014. With NA2 DT he began his virtual choreography practice creating more than 20 solos virtually. In 2022 he produced ATLAS Contemporary Dance Congress in Puerto Rico and produced and choreographed HUMANIMAL, a contemporary and multimedia dance show. Collazo was invited to teach at the Boris Eifman Dance Academy in Saint Petersburg, Russia and to perform at the SAI Dance Festival in Tokyo, Japan. Most recently he received an invitation to perform and teach for the Detroit Dance City Festival 2024, where he was awarded best choreographer. Collazo also joined the dance faculty at Sagrado Corazón University in San Juan where teaches contemporary dance.
