A Brief History:

  • The story of Giselle, originally titled Giselle, ou les Wilis, was created by composer Adolphe Adam and first performed at the Paris Opera in 1841 before becoming a nationally staged ballet.
  • Giselle is from ballet’s “Romantic Era” which was popular in Europe throughout the 1830s and 1840s.  Many of the ballets from this era centered on the supernatural, particularly women who become spirits.
  • Adolphe Adam was inspired to create Giselle by Heinrich Heine’s De lÁllemagne and Victor Hugo’s Les Orientales.
  • Italian ballerina, Carlotta Grisi, was the first Giselle and gained fame because of her performance.
  • Giselle is one of the oldest classical ballets still performed by ballet companies around the world.
