Choreographer Val Caniparoli’s Ibsen’s House is a tour de force ballet that takes on Victorian repression through five female characters from plays by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. In the late 1800s, Ibsen’s plays challenged Victorian conventions, particularly around the place of women in society. In that sense, he was an early feminist, shocking and outraging viewers with his radical ideas about gender roles.
