The Preparatory Division of the Otto M. Budig Academy explores the beauty and rigor of classical ballet while introducing students to the versatility of other dance disciplines. Students in the Preparatory Division develop strong foundations in dance technique to support their future advancement into pre-professional training or the pursuit of other passions in dance.

ABOUT PREPARATORY DIVISION LEVEL 1
Preparatory Division Level 1 is the first level of formal training within the Academy and is designed to support students advancing from our Children’s Division as well as new students ages 8 – 9 based on placement. PD Level 1 students participate in two Ballet Technique classes per week and have the option to engage in an additional elective class. PD Level 1 students participate in the annual Spring Production and may be eligible to audition for select Company productions.
Students should enroll in their preferred track below. Each track is equal in merit but offers varying schedules. Enrollment is for the full Academy Year (August – May). All classes take place in person at the Margaret and Michael Valentine Center for Dance.

Preparatory Division Level 2 students continue advancing in their knowledge of classical ballet technique as new and more complex steps are introduced. They also begin exploring new dance disciplines with introductory classes in Jazz. PD Level 2 students participate in classes twice per week and have the option to engage in additional elective classes. PD Level 2 students participate in the annual Spring Production and may be eligible to audition for select Company productions.

Preparatory Division Level 3 focuses on physical strength, proper placement and advancing ballet vocabulary as students prepare for future transition to pointe work when they enter the Young Dancer Division. They also continue exploration of other dance disciplines with introductory classes in African Dance. PD Level 3 students participate in classes three times per week and have the option to engage in additional elective classes. PD Level 3 students participate in the annual Spring Production and may be eligible to audition for select Company productions.
